Abstract:A seal coating system for an aeroengine is a major measure to control the clearance between
rotary blades and a corresponding stationary casing liner. Abrasive coating applied to the tip of a blade
is intended to protect it from wear damage as a result of its scraping against a seal liner or coating for
a casing or a shroud component, thereby minimize the blade tip clearance. The materials, preparation,
merit and disadvantage, applications of abrasive coatings for the blade tip were described in this paper.
The state of the art of the abrasive coatings and their development requirements in China were also
briefed. A variety of technologies are urgently demanded, namely novel abrasive coatings for advanced
high performance aeroengines, abrasive coatings and their optimizations for titanium alloy and nickel
base single crystal superalloy blades, as well as test and evaluation technologies such as that for
the abradable matching property between the blade tip coating and corresponding abradable liner or
coatings under service conditions, aimed to improve the reliability and lifetime of seal structure systems
for aeroengines
